Think out of the box

That’s what the government is campaigning for.

However, when I was making a claim for a short 8 week transparent water painting course under the Learning Development Scheme, my verification officer told me she is not sure if I can make a claim for such a purpose. Firstly, isn’t it a LEARNING DEVELOPMENT scheme? You mean you approve of claims made for items like iPhones and cameras but you have to consider if a claim made against art lessons should be approved? The reason I was given was that it is not an USUAL item to be claimed. Yes, what if I am really interested in enriching myself and raise my cultural awareness instead of thinking about how I can facebook my friends everywhere I go with my new iPhone? So yes that makes me UNUSUAL. But then again, why does everything here have to be the norm? Why are the norms, regardless right or wrong, accepted without question whereas the outliers are always given a second thought? You mean, something as straight forward as that, (the idea of learning and development is pretty clear here) you can’t make a decision and have to seek higher authority because it is not the norm? Come on, how can a nation ever think out of the box when it functions like this. To have creativity, firstly we need the room for it. Room is only given with flexibility of the system. If everything is so rigid and your mind is so airtight, creativity can’t survive even if you have them. Think out of the box, they say. But give me an exit to get out of that box first.
